Coin blanks in their truest sense, are the product of the first stage in the coin manufacturing process. Here is how that occurs in case you may not know. The US Mint buys rolls of metal that are 13 inches wide and around 1500 feet in length. These rolls are used to make the nickel, dime, quarter, half-dollar and dollar. These are then fed through a blanking press where the sizes are punched out of the sheet. These are the coin blanks. True coin blanks will be slightly larger than the finished coin just due to the fact that the blank hasn't been manufactured further to put the raised edge on it. Always be aware that coin blanks will usually have a rough edge and will also appear to be grainy and have an off color appearance. Oh, one last item. BEWARE of shiny coin blanks with a smooth edge as these usually are counterfeit made to deceive your local vending machines.
