Clip Error Coins

Anyone trying to squeeze one more holiday cookie out of a thinly stretched batch of dough knows exactly what a clip-error is. Clip errors occur in coinage when planchets, the discs that become coins, are somehow cut too close together, taking a nick, slice, or even a big bite out of a coin.

It is easy to imagine the broad margin for errors of many kinds that existed when coins were made by hand. Metal was melted to a malleable state, rolled thin, and cut in strips before being stamped out in discs. Discs (planchets, also called flans) were then placed on the anvil, struck on one side and then the other. Being able to strike both sides at once was a true innovation in early coin-making, but required a sure hand and a sure eye, over and over and over. Ancient coins show the stresses of this manufacture (remember that manu-facture translates from its Latin roots as "making by hand") in off-center strikes, uneven impressions, ragged edges and clip-errors. Making money was both a respected art and an exhausting craft.

Clip-errors are rarer in modern machine-made coins and are therefore treasured by collectors, perhaps as a reminder that even machines can make mistakes.
